Aerial View of Ares I-X Flight Test

An aerial video crew observed the October 28, 2009 Ares I-X test flight from a Cessna Skymaster aircraft positioned approx. 10 nautical miles away from the vehicle at an altitude of 12,000 feet. The videographer used a gyro-stabilized high-definition camera system mounted to the outside of the aircraft to capture this spectacular footage which provides extremely valuable engineering data, and imagery of the recovery sequence in rarely-seen detail. Ares I-X is the first flight test of the Constellation Program and provides NASA an early opportunity to gather critical data during vehicle ascent and during booster deceleration and recovery.

My layman’s interpretation of what they said is that the flight path was off a little and resulted in lateral forces that caused the pitching. In the design it is supposed to detach with only forward momentum, i.e. no tumbling.

Agree and see how it reacts to the thrust….i think for my own opinion, they had already tested the booster…..on the ground, i know that we need to test it in flight but at least they could of at least did, a 10 second thrust if its a dummy why not send it far away it doesnt have to come back!

That was the booster. The return capsule at the top was a dummy load. Anyway, I suppose that the third chute was a redundancy.
