How cramped would the backseat of a Cessna 172 be for two full size adults?
December 31, 2009
I calculated it and weight & balance would be within limits, but in terms of passenger comfort, would they fit in the back seat? One adult is 200 the other 180. They are both 6 ft.
Gonna be snug… Also, does the airplane you plan to fly have an upgraded useful load I am unaware of?
Average C172 useful load 800 lb… 380 in back, 340 in front (two standard folks) leaves 80 lb for fuel.. that’s 13 gallons. Take out 5 gallons for 30 minute day VFR reserve, and you have 8 gallons to use… just about an hour… Note.. no baggage, no flight bag…

Got something to say?

You are going to suffer. You’ll fit but I wouldn’t want to go for long.

2 people would be shoulder to shoulder

It’s not much different from the back seat of a small 2-door car. How tolerable this situation is will depend on the length of the trip, in both the car and the plane.

Have been in the back seat of a C172
I would recheck the weight and balance 380lbs in the rear only leaves about 100lbs each for the front seats.
In general a 172 is only a 3 passenger plane, I have done 4 passengers but 2 were children.

Less room than in back of an old Volkswagen beetle.
