Moorabbin to Mornington Peninsula – Garmin G1000

December 23, 2011

This was me flying VH-MSN solo from Moorabbin Airport to the Mornington Peninsula (and back) on the 18th August 2007 at 1:00pm (EST). That’s me in the left hand seat, my dad is doing the filming from the right. There is no takeoff, because dad didn’t know how to use the camera properly, and he stopped the camera part way through the landing, that’s why there is no footage of that. Aside from that, it was a very nice flight. The G1000 is fantastic. The only problem I had was on the ground trying to get clearance for takeoff. I taxied to 35R, with about 4 planes in front of me and 3 behind. I had to wait for all the traffic to clear, until I was at the holding point, and I gave my ready call. But it was then that the tower decided to change the duty runway to 17 L and R, so I had to do a U turn at the holding point, taxi to the other side of the airfield and wait another 5 min for all the planes in front of me to takeoff. In the end I worked out that I wasted $60 waiting to takeoff. Not happy Jan!! Plane Info: Cessna 172S NAV III Engine: Lycoming IO360 180BHP (2700RPM) Avionics: Garmin G1000 Cruise: 120 Kts (216kph) MTOW: 2550lbs (1159kg) Fuel: 201 Lt Usable Burn: 36 Lt/hr (Mixture Leaned) Range: 5h35m / 670Nm / 1240km / 770 miles Service Ceiling: 14000 Ft Fixed Pitch propeller (Diameter: 76in, 190cm) Cost (Standard G1000 Equipped): US$254500 (Approx: AU$305000) Cost with everything: US$311025 (Approx: AU$375000) I got my licence with my school, St Kevins College Toorak

NSW Institute of Sport – World first altitude training facility (Swimming)

December 22, 2011

wwos.ninemsn.com.au Australia’s swimming stars believe a world-first altitude training facility in Sydney could prove a secret weapon in the lead-up to the London Olympics. The NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) on Thursday officially launched the new facility at Sydney Olympic Park which will allow swimmers to train in similar conditions as they would experience at altitude training camps around the world. A host of elite swimmers, including 100m world champion James Magnussen, Geoff Huegill and Matt Abood, road tested the system – set up inside a canopy covering two 25m lanes – on Thursday. And they were left feeling it could give them a significant edge over the competition, particularly by taking away the need to spend time abroad to train at altitude set-ups in locations like Mexico, the US, Spain and Switzerland. “The best thing about this technology is having it available and right at your fingertips, all the time,” Huegill said. “It is a bit of an effort to get over to Mexico or Flagstaff (Arizona) and the highest altitude training facilities we have in Australia is at Thredbo. “So to be able to able to produce a tent that goes twice as high as Thredbo and get the same sort of result is something that I think the NSWIS has invested very well into.” Magnussen, the 100m freestyle world champion and among Australia’s brightest hopes for gold in London, said he would use the system in coming weeks having never had the opportunity to train at altitude before. “It’s

Passenger lands turboprop plane after pilot dies

December 20, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – Doug White and his family had just enjoyed a smooth takeoff and were ascending through the clouds when the pilot guiding their twin-engine plane tilted his head back and made a guttural sound. The retired jet pilot, Joe Cabuk, was unconscious. And though White had his pilot’s license, he had never flown a plane as large as this. “I need help. I need a King Air pilot to talk to. We’re in trouble,” he radioed. Story continues below ?advertisement | your ad here Then he turned to his wife and two daughters, ages 16 and 18: “You all start praying hard.” Behind him, his wife trembled. Sixteen-year-old Bailey cried. Eighteen-year-old Maggie threw up. White, 56, landed the plane on his own about 30 minutes later, coaxed through the harrowing ordeal by air traffic controllers who described exactly how to bring the aircraft to safety. The pilot died, but White somehow managed. White had logged about 150 hours recently flying a single-engine Cessna 172 but had no experience flying the faster, larger King Air. He declared an emergency to air traffic controllers — White already knew how to use the radio. On Sunday afternoon, he got his first lesson landing the larger craft. They were on their way home from Marco Island, where they’d traveled after his brother died from a heart attack the week before. White owns the King Air plane and leases it out through his company, Archibald, La.-based White Equipment Leasing LLC. White got his pilot’s license in 1990, but said 18
