Flight Simulator Review – A Pilot’s Perspective

As far back as I can remember, I have wanted to be a pilot. Like many people, as a child I would look up at the sky and dream of one day becoming a pilot and flying my very own airplane. Now, many years later as an adult, I have achieved this goal. I am now a Commercially Rated Helicopter pilot, as well as a Private Fixed wing pilot.
Before I started years of very expensive and in-depth flight training, I started to experiment with different Flight Simulators on the computer. These “games” have become so technologically advanced, that I would not even call them “games” anymore. After using these simulators, I decided that I had the passion to pursue a career in aviation. Later in Flight School, I continued to use them as “advanced learning tools” when studying for exams.
The latest Flight Simulator Software that I would recommend to be used as an “advanced learning tool” before you think about spending $50,000 on a Commercial Pilot’s Licence is a program called Flight Pro Sim. Flight Pro Sim offers real life cockpit controls, thousands of airports and the freedom to fly anywhere in the world, and anytime of day or night with exceptional detail and unlimited weather conditions.
For example, recently I was studying for the instrument portion of my flight test, I actually practiced instrument flying on the Cessna C-172 on Flight Pro Sim. I tracked inbound/outbound radials to the VOR at LAX (Las Angeles Airport). Navigated through different weather conditions at night using ADF equipment and also flew GPS direct. Practicing with Flight Pro Sim helped me to gain a better understanding of Radio Navigation for my flight test.
Flight Pro Sim offers more than 80 different planes, and new ones constantly being added, from the Wright brother’s plane to the most modern military fighter aircraft, and even helicopters. If there is an aircraft that you would like to try flying, Flight Pro Sim probably has it.
Flight Pro Sim offers a very challenging and rewarding experience. Even for a real-life Pilot like myself. I would recommend purchasing this product before making the decision to become a pilot, as this is the closest experience to Real-world Flying that I have found. If you decide to become a pilot, it can also be used as an effective training tool during your flight training.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday revoked the licenses of the two Northwest Airlines pilots who overshot their Minneapolis destination by 150 miles. The pilots — Timothy Cheney of Gig Harbor, Wash., the captain, and Richard Cole of Salem, Ore., the first officer — told safety investigators they were working on their personal laptop computers and lost track of time and place. The pilots, who were out of communications with air traffic controllers for 91 minutes, violated numerous federal safety regulations in the incident last Wednesday night, the FAA said in a statement. The violations included failing to comply with air traffic control instructions and clearances and operating carelessly and recklessly, the agency said. “You engaged in conduct that put your passengers and your crew in serious jeopardy,” FAA regional counsel Eddie Thomas said in a letter to Cheney. Northwest Flight 188 was not in communications with controllers or the airline dispatchers “while you were on a frolic of your own. … This is a total dereliction and disregard for your duties.” Phoenix Arizona Aviation Law Expert Charlie Brewer says it’s likely their laptops blocked the navigation instruments. Pilot Training Institutes ? The Breeding Ground for Budding Pilots

Flying an aircraft is no mean task. It requires extensive training – both practical and theoretical. Lately, flying an aircraft has been considered as that for the adventurous and courageous types and has generated a lot of interest. This has resulted in mushrooming of pilot training institutes all over India.
Pilot Training Institutes train an individual on the various skills required to fly an aircraft. It teaches a pilot the process of flying an aircraft through the air with proper direction and control. It also teaches the students to understand the weather forecasts. A qualified pilot is supposed to be an expert in leading his crew and the passengers even in trying circumstances and a leader par excellence. Besides academic qualifications, a commercial pilot should have a sound mind in a healthy body, lot of courage, determination and self-confidence. There are quite a good number of flying schools in India that are recognized by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and provide excellent training to individuals aspiring to become pilots.

To conclude, the boom in the aviation sector and further opening up of the economy, these pilot training institutes are here to stay. It would not be a surprise if in near future, we see opening up of more top grade training institutes like Chimes Aviation Academy. Thus, average pilot training institutes should buckle up in order to compete with Chimes Aviation Academy type pilot training institutes as more competition is bound to come.

Senior Pilots Drawn to Light Sport Aircraft

A good friend returned from EAA’s 2007 Airventure Oshkosh Airshow holding delivery position #426 on a new Cessna Model 162 Skycatcher. I’d been trying to track down a C162 buyer for a while, so this is great timing as I want to find out what is drawing current, licensed private pilots to the Skycatcher. What I found did not really surprise me.
At 78.5 years young, Fresno pilot John Pugliese has amassed 7,000 hours in a pilot career that has included ownership of a Fairchild PT-23, a Cessna 120 and his current bird, a 1952 Cessna 170. After a heart attack in the early ’90s, Pugliese must now undergo additional scrutiny each time he is re-issued a third-class medical card. And while he has good health today to flies with an FAA medical card, he knows that may not be the case forever. “I’m hoping that Cessna can deliver my Skycatcher before the day comes when the medical card cannot be re-issued.”
I’m certain Pugliese is not the only “senior” private pilot who is looking at Light Sport aircraft as a sort of “workaround” to current FAA medical rules. And as a refresher, let me pass along what the FAA says about the subject of Sport Pilot medicals.
Sport Pilot licensing rules require either a third-class FAA medical certificate or a current and valid U.S. driver’s license as evidence of medical eligibility (provided the individual’s most recent application for an FAA medical certificate was not denied, revoked, suspended or withdrawn). So as long as a pilot can move into an LSA before he/she is denied, all is well and good. However, once FAA takes that card away, those denied pilots cannot use a driver’s license in lieu of the medical card.
As an experienced aviator, Pugliese picked the Skycatcher for a number of reasons. “The main thing was the hydraulic brakes” he said. “I’m an old taildragger driver from way back, and sometimes you have to almost lock up one wheel to keep things straight. And nothing against Rotax, but I like that Cessna is putting Continentals in the Skycatcher, since it will be easy to find service coast-to-coast on that engine. I also like that I will be able to get parts through an established Cessna dealer network. And at just over five feet tall, I’m happy the Skycatcher’s rudder pedals are adjustable. The plane fits me fine, and is really a great looking airplane!”
As a successful businessman, Pugliese knows that the $109,000 base price will climb before delivery day. A clause in the Cessna contract allows for cost of living increases and with California sales tax that he says is a staggering nine percent, John expects the Skycatcher to come in at around $140,000 without wheel pants or a ballistic chute. He expects that by the time Cessna delivers the 162, the Garmin G300 panel will change for the better, as avionics always do.
Bottom line: John Pugliese is one of those older pilots we all love…nice as can be, true to his fellow pilots, and always willing to take a young kid flying to spark their internal fires. When he gets the Skycatcher, it’ll make a perfect platform to serve his mission profile, which is to poke holes in the sky while converting fossilized dinosaurs into altitude to chase down the elusive airport hamburger.
